So this is actually old news, but! I painted my car (94 Civic) to coincide with my Emerging Artist Exhibit I had at Artspace earlier this year. The conditions were good and I was able to get a nice clean picture of it. Enjoy!

Art On The Move

I was recently informed that my submission was chosen along with 11 other local artists for the Art On The Move project! The project itself began in 2007 and has continued in a bi-yearly fashion. I consider myself very fortunate because the pool of applicants was quite large. A local CAT(Capital Area Transit) bus will be half wrapped on both sides and ready to roll out this April. I am very excited to see it in person!

So I've been slacking a fair bit in this department, but I've been up to quite a bit, not as much as I should but more than I've been ready for. Artspace has been a pretty awesome experience so far and on top of meeting some awesome people I've been able to push myself a little bit harder and a bit further than I have before. That being said, if you had a chance to make it to the Block Gallery last month these pics won't be big news to you, BUT if you didn't then I hope you enjoy. For the exhibition I was asked to pay homage to a celebrity and my choice seemed quite natural considering the direction I was feeling with my work. Up until that point I had decided to stop depicting celebrities for various reasons. The most important being that they receive enough attention as it is. The others being related to copyright issues, improper use of image etc etc. I will have to say it was fun becoming obsessed with someone, image hunting, blog reading etc. The bigger relief came at the conclusion thankfully.

The Auction

So I've decided that it is in the best interest of these pieces that I auction them off. I love and adore each one but I won't have the space for them in the coming months when I get the heave-ho from Artspace. So what? Well, if you happen to be in the area, or not, you'll have a chance of owning one of my pieces pretty darn cheap if you're lucky.

I plan on starting the bid on each piece at $75. The auction will take place on December 3rd in studio 108 at Artspace from 6p until 9:15 after which the winners will be announced and the piece(s) will be taken to their new forever home(s).
So what if I don't live in Raleigh, or can't be there? You can hit me up @ garrett@garrettscales.com and tell me the bid you want to make on the particular piece. Keep in mind that the bids increase in 25 dollar increments. I will add your name to the list with the price you're willing to bid. Also for those of you outside the city and/or state, I DO have the ability to ship to any coast or any country, and if that happens to be your case we can settle up on shipping after the auction. I plan on creating a press release soon which I will send to through the proper channels so keep your eyes peeled. ...was super fun and this post is super late in posting. If you didn't know, I am currently Artspace's REAR (Regional Emerging Artist in Residence). It's an awesome opportunity for me and I hope by the end of the residence that it shows. These were the goods.

I think for September's first Friday I'll make shirt versions, and possibly paper prints with nice frames? Each one of the smaller pieces were made on plywood with a hardboard backing. I key-holed the backs with my router so they would hang flush to the wall. They were painted using spray paint and stencils for the colors and then screenprinted with acrylic ink.

The image to the right is a 36"x60" crop of SUN that I posted earlier.

I was in late at night and thought to take some pictures of where I create. I've been permitted this wonderful space by the authority of Rusty Beans and T Bird LaCombe.
I believe my crowning achievement to be the folding work table. Using some scrap plywood and 2x4's and with the assistance of door hinges I was able to create/eliminate space. Also you'll see my growing collection of paint. I have been proponent of Rustoleum for many moons(and still am!), but after trying Montana Gold I've had to shelve them for now.
l also threw in a pic of a growing collection of wood panel(canvas). I am a hoarder of sorts and found my collection of blank wood growing faster than I could paint it. I hope by the end of the year the pile should be reduced, eliminated, or made to better use by way of constructing something larger and possibly heavier.
The last pic is of the lovely ladies that help me create my masterpieces, without them I would be reduced to purchasing canvas, who does that anyway?

Connecting Gallery

If you happen to be in Raleigh from now until June 19th, you'll have a chance to see two finished works of mine in the Connecting Gallery at Artspace. When I started this project I had no idea where to take it. I've never completed anything on this scale and have never had more than one piece fit thematically. I am very proud to say these are mine. Big shouts to D-Sobes, who puts up with more of my crap than anyone, and is there to help me in a pinch.

Both pieces are 48" x 93" and both were quite a pain in the butt to create, hang, and frame. I hope you enjoy!

I've got a good feeling that this project isn't completely over. I read an article not too long ago about the "power of 7" and the way the number 7 fits it's way into nature. According to the article the seven luminaries of medieval astrology were the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. I hope to create the five remaining luminaries in the coming months.

It's almost been a whole year since my last post. Time for some BIG changes. I'm gonna restart this bad boy with a post about the piece I finished for Artspace's Give & Take event. I believe 50+ artists were invited to create a work no bigger than 12"x12" to be sold during an event that will benefit their Summer Art Scholarship program. Each piece will be priced at $50. This will be my second year and second piece that I have completed for said event. If you happen to be in the Raleigh area, check it out!
